If potatoes and cocoa beans are growing on your island but cacti won't, the issue is almost certainly caused by
Mineland server custom rules,
island chunk loading, or
building restrictions.
Here are the primary reasons why cactus isn't growing on your island and how to fix them:
1. The Block Adjacent / Auto-Break Trap
In vanilla Minecraft physics, a cactus
immediately breaks or refuses to grow if there is any solid block, fence, slab, ladder, torch, or string directly adjacent to the space where the second cactus block needs to grow.
- The Trap: If you built a standard single-player auto-farm using fences or blocks floating next to the top layer, Mineland's anti-lag plugins may instantly delete or void the dropped cactus entity when it pops off, making it look like it never grew at all.
- Fix: Test a completely isolated single sand block with 1 cactus in an open area with no blocks on any of the 4 sides (North, South, East, West) and at least 2 empty blocks above it.
2. Custom Server Crop/Island Upgrades
On custom Skyblock networks like Mineland, standard vanilla random ticks are often reduced to control lag.
- Islands Upgrades: Open your island menu (usually /is, /is upgrade, or /island) and check if there is a Crop Growth / Island Tick Rate upgrade. Cacti have naturally slow growth cycles, so without server crop upgrades, growth can take a long time compared to crops boosted by island level perks.
- Island Level Limits: Some custom servers lock specific natural crop growth behind island levels or specific farming skill levels. Check /skills or /jobs to ensure your account has unlocked cactus farming.
3. Chunk AFK / Simulation Distance Restrictions
Crops in Skyblock only receive growth ticks if the chunk is actively loaded in memory.
- If you step off your island to go to the server hub or spawn, your island chunk unloads instantly, stopping all cactus growth.
- Even if you are on your island, if your cactus farm is built far away from your spawn point/AFK spot (beyond the server's simulation distance, typically 2 to 4 chunks), those blocks will stay frozen in time.
- Fix: Stand within 16–32 blocks of the cactus for 15–20 minutes to see if it grows.
4. Custom Crop Hoppers / Chunk Collectors Required
Many modern Skyblock servers ban or disable traditional entity-drop farms (farms where crops fall as item entities into water channels) to prevent lag.
- Instead, they enforce the use of Chunk Collectors or Crop Hoppers.
- Check the server shop (/shop) under the Farming or Redstone/Mechanics section to see if there is a specialized "Cactus Hopper" or "Farm Auto-Collector" required for automated crop harvesting.
How to Diagnose it Right Now
- Place 1 sand block on the floor.
- Place 1 cactus on top.
- Keep a 2-block clear radius around it (no walls, no torches, no fences, no roof).
- Stand next to it for 15 minutes without leaving your island.
If it grows, your automatic farm design is being wiped by the server's anti-lag/item-clearing system. If it
still doesn't grow, run /is upgrade or ask in server chat (/ch g) if cactus requires a specific Island Rank/Perm.
